Lanzarote Sunshine Breaks
Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. And the Canary Islands are one of the country´s most visited regions. Second only to Catalunya in terms of popularity. Thanks to the fact that these seven islands all enjoy great weather all year round – making them Europe’s only genuine winter sun destination.
Yet these Canaries are by no means all birds of a feather as each island has its own separate identity and attractions. And whilst Tenerife and Gran Canaria are quite built up little Lanzarote remains largely untouched by tourism – especially outside of the three main resorts on the island, which are Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise.
Tourists have been visiting this island since the 1970s when package holidays first started to be marketed to sun starved Northern Europeans. And today Lanzarote welcomes around 1.5 million visitors every year.
Many of them now opt to stay in villas in Lanzarote as tourists are now able to book their own accommdoaion direct online thanks to the rise in internet usage over the last five years. Whereas in the past they would have had to book a holiday via a travel agent.
Holiday apartments in Lanzarote are also a popualr form of accommodation. Not least because they offer great value for money. With basic studios on centrally located complexes available from as little as €180 per week.
Puerto del Carmen is the oldest resort on the island – located around fifteen minutes transfer time from the main airport at Arrecife. And holidaymakers will find an excellent selection of holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen available for rent in areas such as Los Mojones and Risco Prieto. Both of which are located just a short walk from the Old Town harbour area.
Playa Blanca in the south of the island is the second most popular tourist resort on the island. Boasting great beaches and a good selection of four star hotels. As well as a fantastic microclimate that is especially noticeble during the winter months. When the north of the island can be shrouded in cloud.
Costa Teguise is the third largest resort on the island – developed during the 1980´s as a coastal sister to the former inland capital of Teguise. This is the ideal location for anyone planning to tour the islands key attractions as most of these – such as the Cactus Garden and the Jamoes del Agua – are just a 20 minute drive away.
